How to Read an Auto Repair Estimate
Learn what should appear on a repair estimate and which questions to ask before approving work.
A useful estimate identifies the complaint, recommended work, labor hours or charges, parts, shop supplies, taxes, and the expected total.
Parts terminology
Ask whether parts are original-equipment, aftermarket, remanufactured, or used. The right choice depends on the repair, vehicle age, budget, and warranty.
Changes after diagnosis
Tell the shop how you want additional work authorized and set a dollar limit. Keep a copy of the original estimate and the final invoice.
